Meadowshire, by Eric Lindgren

Eric Lindgren is a gifted cartoonist whose brain just overflows with ideas.  Meadowshire is just one of the strips that he has created since the mid 1980s.  In addition to Meadowshire, Eric is also the creator of Space Pirates, Nip, and The Rabbit Berets.  He has been a great supporter to the site, and I encourage you to support his site as well.  You can visit his site by clicking here.

Here's some history behind Meadowshire, in Eric's own words:

"Initially this strip was created in 1981 under the title 'The Wizards'.  The strip came about from my extremely limited knowledge of Dungeons and Dragons and my curiosity about the dark ages.  Looking at the early originals, I can see why the syndicates kicked them back to me so quickly.  Two characters with their eyes floating in a great black void in their cowles with the only way to distinguish between the two of them being the color of their robes.  A couple of okay jokes, but the rest were fairly flat.  In late 1986, after Space Pirates was born, I came across these old originals and decided to revamp them.  I gave Krys, the naive wizard a face, turned his buddy Elroc into a pinewood staff and found myself surprised at just how doggone easy it seemed to write for them.  When I had done the initial changes I had considered calling the strip 'Elroc, the Magic Staff'.  That title never made it to print.  Instead, I named the strip after the place that the adventures took place in;  Meadowshire as a title and Krys' and Elroc's stomping ground was born."

Check out some great Meadowshire art below, including examples from every stage in its evolution!

Example of The Wizards dailies by Eric Lindgren, May 21 and 22, 1982.  Copyright Eric Lindgren.  Paper size:  11" x 8 1/2".  These dailies are the first incarnation of Meadowshire (see Eric's description above).  Below the art is a script for another daily, which is drawn on the back of this sheet (see the art below).

Example of The Wizards daily by Eric Lindgren, date unknown, 1982.  Copyright Eric Lindgren.  Paper size:  11" x 8 1/2".  This particular gag was used in all three stages of Meadowshire (the original art for the other two stages are both pictured on this page as well).  Sorry for the blurry picture;  I was struggling to get it to focus.  I will retake it eventually and repost it.

Examples of Elroc the Enchanted Staff dailies by Eric Lindgren, dates unknown, 1985.  Copyright Eric Lindgren.  These are two separate dailies that were glued together by Eric.  Note the second strip, which is the recurring gag used in all three stages of Meadowshire (the original art for the other two stages are both pictured on this page as well).
